5.7 Decoupling Owners (If Agent owns Deal, Broker owns Contact)

Concept:

This feature allows for assigning different team members as the "owner" of the Contact record itself (representing the overall relationship) versus the "owner" of a specific Opportunity record (representing the current deal).

Real Estate Use Case Example:

A Brokerage Owner might be the assigned Owner of a long-term client Contact record (managing the overall relationship). However, when that client decides to list their property, a specific Listing Agent on the team is assigned as the Owner of the resulting Opportunity card in the Listing Pipeline, taking primary responsibility for managing that specific transaction.

Enabling Decoupled Ownership:

  • Admin Setting: This feature typically needs to be enabled by an administrator via a global setting, often found in SettingsCompany Settings or SettingsOpportunity Settings. Look for a toggle like "Allow different owners for Contact and Opportunity records" or similar phrasing.

How Assignment Works When Enabled:

  • Opportunity Owner: The Owner field selected when creating or editing the Opportunity card determines who is responsible for that specific deal.
  • Contact Owner: The Assigned User field on the Contact record itself determines who is responsible for the overall relationship with that person.
  • These two fields can be set to different users if the decoupled ownership setting is enabled. This allows for more flexible team structures and commission tracking scenarios.
